“Much to my own surprise I’m still meditating regularly! I find it difficult to do it twice a day but always do my morning one followed by a bit of yoga. Sets me up well for the day.”

“I learnt TM when I was 36, I am now 61. At that time I was in a highly demanding job, smoking about 40 cigarettes a day and with a heart that was beating faster than a formula one car. A friend said that if I didn’t do something I would soon drop dead. He had been meditating since he was very young and suggested I learnt TM. I laughed a lot because I I thought the whole thing absurd. I was very “left hemisphere”, and “logic” told me that to sit chanting was a ridiculous thing. However he kept pestering me and said that it would do no harm in learning.

So I went along. In those days you took flowers and fruit to the person teaching you and this added to my feeling of TM being mumbo jumbo. I sat through the whole lesson being sceptical and feeling very silly. The following sessions didn’t change my opinion either though I persisted with the course. However even though my head was telling me it was rubbish I couldn’t deny the actual positive physical affects it was having on me. All my life I had what I would now call a “knotted stomach”. I was so used to it that I thought it normal. From the outset the meditation released this, it was so physically different that I became worried. I spoke to my TM teacher about this and explained that I had all these worries and troubles, but I wasn’t concerned about them in the way I was before. My creative powers burst and I was running on full cylinders without any of the worries previously. My smoking level decreased so that I found it easier to give up and I was a lot happier in myself. In fact if I came home from work tired and snappy the children would look at me and say “go meditate mum” and off I would trot and come back downstairs with a different state of mind. They said they reaped the benefits of me meditating too!

I was so converted by the positive effect TM had, physically, mentally and creatively that I allowed my children to learn. Both my daughters have said that TM assisted them in pain control during childbirth and want my granddaughters to learn for this very reason.

I meditated for ten years nonstop and then gradually lapsed as life took over and the need to meditate became less as I wiped out the stressful elements of my life. I started again recently as a family trauma caused me to be in an over anxious state, I stopped sleeping and had the problems going round and round in my head like worms. I knew I had the tool to control my nerves and began to meditate again. After a few weeks of meditating I was sleeping properly again, and feeling better in myself. Meditation certainly doesn’t make the problems go away – it just makes it easier to cope with them and it is far better to approach problems with an easy mind rather than a stressed one.”

“Before learning TM, I had been interested in meditation for a while and had taken classes and had tried out various types of meditation. I could see that they were all useful, but it was very hard to practice on my own and carry on going.
When I read David Lynch’s book, Catching the Big Fish, he made it sound so easy! So I decided to give TM a go.
I think that the thing about Transcendental Meditation is that it is an easy way into meditating that makes it easier to carry on going.
2 years on, although I go through phases of practising and sometimes not, in general I feel much more calm and in charge of myself. At the times when I go weeks without doing any, it is always good to know that the free follow up group sessions are there if I need the boost to get back into it. And I do notice that I need to get back into it when I am feeling a little irritable, or not so centred and life starts to feel like a bit of a frenzy. I find that it is especially at those times when I think that I don’t have the time to practice, that TM is actually most needed. It is a skill learnt for life.”

“Hi, My name is Janice and I work as a housing support worker for vulnerable clients who are homeless. My husband Peter is a Senior Manager for the council dealing with gritting/potholes etc – all the stuff that people love to complain about! We live in Halifax Yorkshire and have been together 38 years. Peter did TM many years ago. I take things FAR too seriously sometimes and have what I call “Dicky fits” mainly at work – or should I say I used to have! (Well if I am honest I used to get angry at people dropping litter, and just telling off any irresponsible idiot that came my way!) I had my appraisal a couple of years ago and my boss challenged me to have only 2 what he calls “temper tantrums” before my next annual appraisal. Around the same time Peter had commented that he had forgotten how to relax. I thought about my challenge and asked my boss to support me going on a 4 day TM course in Manchester. He agreed that if I paid the fee he would give me the time off work (he obviously wanted some peace & quiet!) We went on the course and all I need to say is the following Christmas he shook my hand and at our work Christmas gathering he congratulated me on not losing my temper once. Some of the new staff looked puzzled and said “We have never seen Janice angry/losing it/out of control” etc etc. Every day at 6.30pm my alarm goes off on my phone it says “meditate” and we do. End of story!”

“Since the TM course I took with you in February I have seen a very noticeable if not dramatic change, not only in my general wellbeing but also in my ability to communicate & my all round self awareness, confidence & self esteem.
I am meditating twice a day, between 15-20 minutes ( first thing in the morning, then as soon as I return from work ) I feel a lot more relaxed & in control of my personality!
The PTSD is beginning to have less impact & control of my everyday existence!”

” I find TM provides peace in a world full of urgency, and would recommend it to anyone.”

I am a very busy married mother of 2 young daughters aged 3 and 7. I also work part time five days a week and spend a lot of time looking after my elderly mother. As to be expected my day to day life can be stressful and quite demanding and whilst running a busy household and job I have battled with depression for a number of years which until recently resulted in me having panic attacks.
I completed the TM Course through recommendation that it would benefit my depression, but was unaware at the time of how many other benefits I would experience! Since then I can say without a doubt that TM has changed my life for the better!
Just carrying out 2 lots of 20 minutes once a day is all it needs. I cannot believe how calm and less worrisome I am and how things that would normally get me down now just go over my head. I also feel energized and lifted after each meditation, it really does completely recharge my batteries and gives me a buzz. I normally feel a slump in the day around 3pm just before I have to do the school run but find the TM instantly gives me that boost of energy needed to carry on for the rest of the day!
Also during sleepless nights with the children I would normally be struggling to get through the day, but again practising my TM before I get up makes me feel like I have a full uninterrupted 8 hours sleep!
I have also found my motivation has soared, nothing is too much trouble anymore, whereas in the past certain jobs I may have not felt bothered to do, I now carry out without a moments hesitation. My patience and tolerance has also improved, situations that would normally perhaps irritate and aggravate me no longer do so.
I would now say without a doubt that I would not be without TM in my life. I cannot imagine a day without doing it and it has truly turned my life around for the better.

“My experience of learning TM was something I will never forget. I remember when I was taught the technique, being gobsmacked at its simplicity! After my first 20 minute meditation guided by my teacher I could instantly feel the results!! I felt calmer and had a level of mental clarity that I couldn’t explain. When meditating regularly it has really helped me with my problems with anxiety!! I wish the government made TM a compulsory part of the national curriculum!! ”
